FIFTY

Abraham gently laid his hands on Sticks’s shoulders. “What are you talking about? They’re still here.” He stepped to the side.

Streak, Melegal, Dan, and Boon were inside the throne room of the Wizard Tower. Boon was talking to a man she didn’t recognize. The man, who had thick chestnut hair, wore green wizard robes. Dan appeared to be having a friendly chat with Sam and Guppy. Streak lay in the throne’s seat and winked at her.

Melegal sauntered over to her with one of his thumbs in his belt loop. “You aren’t very weepy eyed, considering you thought we were all dead.” He flashed a smile. “I like that in a gal.”

Sticks fought back a warm smile. “It’s not like there’s a shortage of rotten men. I figured I’d find another around the corner.”

Abraham gave her a friendly shake. “God bless your black heart, you little rascal. And to think, we thought you might have perished.”

“What happened? I thought all of you burned up in the diner?”

“There ain’t no fire that can burn me up,” Streak said. He rolled his neck from side to side. “Another portal opened up, and lo and behold, it was the old gang coming to save our bacon.”

She met Streak at the throne, picked him up, and sat down with him in her lap. She kissed the top of his head. “I’m glad you are all okay. I thought it was over for me too.” She looked at Nath Dragon, who stood outside with Brenwar and Sansla Libor. “Did they bring him too?”

Streak tilted his head. “No, I’ve never seen him before. I’ve got to say, I like those scales on his arms. Very cool.”

“I guess he’s from Brenwar’s home. He said he was looking for him.”

Boon was talking it up with the other man dressed like a wizard. They were having an excited conversation.

“Who’s that?” she asked.

“Boon’s grandson, from what I gathered. They picked him up in another world.”

“What other world?”

Streak shrugged his wings.

Melegal joined Sticks. “He’s an old acquaintance from my home, Bish. I really never thought I’d see that man again. Or both of them, for that matter.”
